BE an ANGEL: Kelowna single mother in determined want | Information

After leaving a bad relationship, Susan found herself trying desperately to rent a roof for herself and her two little ones.

“Right now I’m on assistance, and it’s super hard to find an affordable, safe place to rent in Kelowna,” said Susan. “So a girlfriend and I — both single moms — got our families together and rented this place. They live upstairs and we live downstairs. It’s not an ideal situation, but otherwise we’d be living in our car.”

Susan was forced to seek assistance from the Central Okanagan Community Food Bank.

“Sometimes I feel guilty that I need help. I think there are others who are worse off than me, but right now the budget is so tight. We are in desperate need,” she said.

“I’m so grateful for the help. The food bank has lots of things that I would not normally buy, but that just means I get to Google new, healthy recipes,” she said with a smile.

Her family is excited about the Christmas hamper offered by the food bank. Family Christmas hampers are stuffed with turkey, cranberries, fresh produce, stuffing, dairy and holiday treats. Families with children will visit the Christmas Store.

“I truly want to extend my gratitude and appreciation for the people who donate to the food bank,” said Susan.

“For me and my family going through a tough time . . . if it wasn’t for them, we would starve,” she says. “It’s already stressful enough keeping a roof over our heads. To not always worry about food relieves a heavy burden as a parent.”
