Many would agree that Kelowna’s most spectacular plus is its proximity to Okanagan Lake. The magnificent splendor of this 135 km stretch of water runs from tip to tail along the coast of Kelowna. Water sports have long been a part of the lifestyle and celebrated here, and the Kelowna Yacht Club (KYC) has been the spotlight since 1945.

KYC is a beacon for boating enthusiasts and the majestic clubhouse is located right on the lake in the city center, perfectly positioned as a hub for Okanagan boats. The beautiful architecture of the building has become a landmark on the lake. KYC is shaped like a ship itself and celebrates over 75 years. The history of the yacht club is closely intertwined with Kelowna’s culture and the core values have remained unchanged over the years. KYC remains steadfast as the committed administrator of the lake and promotes the use and enjoyment of the water world through events and programs. Read more about all programs here.

With a large and active membership, the KYC currently has a waiting list for those interested in joining the ranks. However, in keeping with their community-minded values, there are many programs open to the public including sailing programs and camps, access to event rental space, kayak and SUP rentals, and participation in their paddling program, and now a beautiful cafe on the cafe promenade open to all.

The Galley Lakeside Cafe is right on the water right on the boardwalk at Okanagan Lake in front of the Yacht Club. With takeaway options – perfect for picnickers and boaters – guests can also choose one of the outside tables to settle in. From coffee drinks to wine and homemade salads to sandwiches, the focus is on the support of the locals. The delicious “Shipwheels” on the menu are gourmet ice cream sandwiches made by local ice cream maker QB Gelato.

The café is open daily from 7:00 a.m. and is therefore a destination for morning walks and coffee dishes. It’s open Wednesday through Sunday until 9pm, making this one of the few places in Kelowna to enjoy a glass of wine and a delicious bite by the lakefront.
