New e-bike share program in Kelowna

It has been more than three years since Kelowna’s Bike Share pilot program took over town in the summer of 2018.

There have been several e-scooter companies that have come to town with their own stock programs, but the bikes haven’t returned.

That’ll change this fall, as Ford’s own spin is slowly arriving in Kelowna with a fleet of e-bikes.

Spin has launched a limited number of e-bikes initially, around 40, and will increase it to 100 across Kelowna in the first month as the company assesses public demand.

<p dir=“This new e-bike sharing program will give riders of all abilities access to one of the city’s most popular modes of transport, cycling,” said Matt Worona, Kelowna’s new mobility specialist.

“Spin will be a great partner to work with as we introduce new, environmentally friendly ways to explore Kelowna.”

Spin will provide Kelowna with bicycles with 160 kilometers of range, wireless charging for smartphones, and a double kickstand to keep sidewalks clear.

Unlocking the e-bikes costs $ 1 and the ride costs anywhere from 15 to 39 cents per minute, depending on where you are.

“The existing restrictions and requirements that currently apply to e-scooters apply as far as possible to shared e-bikes,” said a city announcement.

“This includes the free helmet distribution program and access plans for low-income people.”

Spin currently operates e-bikes and e-scooters in 100 cities in North America and Europe and relies on climate-friendly means of transport.
