Life at Regency Retirement Resorts is designed to be fun, enriching, and engaging, but in at least one of the recent past it has also gotten rejuvenating.
When Mike and Susan Allen found out their son was expecting their first grandchild, they couldn’t have been more excited! At the time, the Allens lived in Winnipeg. They have been retired so they made the monumental decision to move to Kelowna to be closer to their family.
“We have weighed our housing options – should we buy, should we build, should we rent?” Said Susanne.
Through their research, they discovered Regency Retirement Resorts and its unique resort-style retirement living, and learned about the brand new Regency Summerwood Retirement Resort in Kelowna. The Allens liked the focus on an enriched lifestyle, extensive amenities and an emphasis on socializing. They knew right away that Summerwood would be an excellent match for them.
The new resort was nearing completion, so they phoned and started formulating their plans.
“They made the decision based on phone calls and plans – they never set foot on the property,” said Ed Hall, president of Regency Retirement Resorts. Their new suite was ready for them when they moved from Winnipeg.

Summerwood is the seventh and newest resort for Regency Retirement Resorts. The Regency concept was formulated about 20 years ago when the founding families Kelowna Kornell and Hall realized that the housing market for seniors was a huge hole. While existing senior residences offered care and services, no one cared about the cheeky senior who wanted to stay engaged and active even after retirement. Regency is committed to providing a comfortable and engaging life in beautiful, convenient surroundings. A place you would proudly call home!
The very first Regency Retirement Resort was Sandalwood in the Glenmore area of Kelowna and it was an instant hit. Ed notes, “As it filled up, people kept coming up to me and saying, ‘Where’s the next one? So, one after the other, now there are seven. “
Every Regency Retirement Resort is crammed with life-enhancing amenities. In addition to an elegant and tasteful dining room in which meals prepared daily by the chef are served, there is a fireplace room, a garden winter garden, a country house kitchen, a sports lounge, a complete in-house cinema, a wood workshop, a wine-making and tasting room, grandchildren’s playroom and much more.
Hall is particularly proud of the cinema. Many residents in their eighties remember taking their best girl to the cinema on Saturday night, which was ornately decorated in the Art Deco style of the time. In order to relive the beautiful memories of the past, all Regency theaters are again artfully decorated in the Art Deco of yesteryear.
Housekeeping and laundry services are carried out bi-weekly, so you can take part in a wide range of activities and events.
Hall jokingly mentions that Regency offers Cruise Ship Living … without getting seasick!

“In the past, the typical residents were single women. However, since we are finding more and more singles and couples who want to move, we have created rooms especially for men, ”says Hall. To make the men feel at home, Regency has added sports lounges with poker and pool tables, woodworking shops, miniature golf courses, shuffleboard, outdoor gardens, and nature trails. Many opportunities to get out and pursue personal interests or enjoy the company of other residents.
When Mike and Susan moved to Summerwood, Mike’s health was in jeopardy. “He broke a vertebra in his back in October. When we got to Summerwood, he was on a walker, ”says Susan. “I think the stimulation here – the people, the extra walking we do here – he threw the rollator away!” The Allens call it the Regency Miracle because Mike’s ability to recover has increased tremendously.
“It’s not uncommon – we see the experience as a kind of rejuvenation when people move here,” says Hall. “It embodies what we set out to do. Our goal is to help Regency residents lead healthier, happier, and more engaging lives than anywhere else. To learn that this has worked for our residents, especially the Allens, is very gratifying. It enables us to be very proud of who we are, what we do and what we do in the lives of our residents. “
